Peter White Public Library in Marquette has received a $16,600 NEA Big Read grant to support a community reading program in March 2025. The selected book is Roz Chast’s graphic memoir Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?, which deals with themes like intergenerational communication and elder care.
“We’re thrilled to bring the NEA Big Read back to the Upper Peninsula,” said Marty Achatz, Adult Programming Coordinator. “Chast’s work is full of humor and compassion, and it will resonate with our community.”
The NEA Big Read aims to inspire conversations and celebrate local creativity. The initiative, supported by the NEA and managed by Arts Midwest, involves community reading programs that highlight diverse voices and perspectives.
Peter White Public Library will partner with various local organizations, including Northern Michigan University and the Marquette Regional History Center, to host events such as writing workshops, art exhibits, and a virtual appearance by Roz Chast.
The program kicks off on March 3, 2025.
